Fish oil tablets are becoming hugely popular now because of the many benefits associated with them, and these benefits are not only being promoted by natural practitioners but also by the scientific community too. As with most things, once they become popular there becomes a wide choice available for us to buy, but like anything else there is good and bad quality on the shelves. So here are the things you need to look out for in a good quality fish oil tablet.
Freshness – A lot of manufacturers want to keep the cost of their tablets down as they believe more people will buy them if they are really cheap. To do this they buy fish from suppliers where the boats have been at sea a long time and they have frozen the fish they have caught. The problem with this is that although it helps keep the overheads and the price down, it actually makes th fish go rancid, and when you have fish oil tablets made from rancid fish you are going to notice that they repeat on you and give you lots of fishy burps; I can tell you from personal experience that this is very unpleasant
DHA Levels – The main reason for taking a fish oil tablet is because it is known to fight inflammation which is behind things like joint pain and arthritis, although it has now also been linked to heart attacks and strokes too, and it is the DHA fat found in omega3 that does this. Most supplements will contain DHA to a certain degree but will normally be higher in the other fat found in omega 3 EPA. Whilst this in itself is not bad, research has shown that of the two the most effective at fighting inflammation is DHA.
Purity – Fish today are subject to a lot of pollution in the waters and that leaves many fish particularly oily fish high in contaminants such as lead and mercury, and of course if that is not removed then those contaminants will be passed on to the person that takes the supplements, and over the long term that could cause more harm than good to their health. There is a process though called molecular distillation which purifies the oil and takes all contaminants out, the bad news is that not all companies use this procedure, especially if they want to make a really cheap product.
Those are the main things to look for in fish oil tablets, and while I appreciate it may seem a bit of a daunting task, but if you want a good quality fish oil tablet that is what you have to look out for, otherwise you may not get all the health benefits that are possible from the omega3 fats.
